My friends in Haiti need our help as they struggle to assist earthquake victims

January 14, 2010

Rather than address a political issue this week, I would like to focus on the current plight of Haiti, which I’m sure you know was devastated by a massive earthquake Wednesday.

More specifically, I’m asking everyone who reads this message to give whatever they can afford to help the people of that poverty-stricken nation survive this latest tragedy.

I realize that a request is hardly necessary, because the good people of West Michigan have a long, proud history of providing aid and comfort to those in peril, anywhere in the world. So let’s just call this message a reminder.

Huizenga: Citizens should demand access to final health care deliberations

We all knew, well before his inauguration, that President Obama would pursue some sort of unfortunate federal takeover of the health care industry.

But at least Obama repeatedly promised to keep the health care debate out in the open, so Americans could closely watch and form their own opinions.

Obama even promised that final deliberations of a health care bill would be broadcast on C-SPAN, the cable network that provides a great deal of access to the workings of the federal government.

Huizenga on Afghanistan: We need a clear commitment to victory

As I joined the rest of the nation Tuesday in watching the President’s nationally televised address, I was relieved to learn that this administration grasps the fundamental importance of winning the war on terror.

But I’m troubled by President Obama’s halfhearted attitude toward the challenge ahead, and I worry about his commitment to see this crucial mission through to a satisfactory conclusion.

None of us are happy about putting more American troops in harm’s way. But the President was correct in stating that American security is very much at stake in this war.

Huizenga Veterans Day statement: Take a moment to thank soldiers for their service

Congressional candidate calls on nation to learn a lesson from Fort Hood tragedy

I would like to take a moment today to recognize our nation’s military veterans, living and deceased, as well as the courageous men and women who are currently serving in the armed forces.

We live in a frightening world, and unfortunately the United States is frequently called upon to protect its own interests abroad, or to deal with overseas atrocities that few other nations are willing to deal with.

Statement from Congressional Candidate Bill Huizenga on Opponent’s Distortion of Record

Jay Riemersma and his campaign staff could apparently use a history lesson regarding the Michigan Business Tax.

In a press release issued earlier this week, the Riemersma campaign incorrectly stated that I voted in favor of the MBT as it currently exists when I was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives.

The fact is that I voted against the final version of the MBT, which may indeed be, as Riemersma’s press release suggests, “the worst tax in the country.”

The Michigan Business Tax came to life as the result of two separate legislative actions in 2007.

Huizenga calls for GOP to renew the effort for a balanced budget amendment

MACKINAC ISLAND – Former State Rep. Bill Huizenga, a candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 2nd Congressional district, today called on his fellow Republicans to reconnect with their party’s historic legacy of fiscal responsibility by pushing for a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget.

Huizenga, on Mackinac Island for the Republican Leadership Conference, said he has noticed a renewed sense of spirit in the party. Much of that is a reaction to the wasteful policies of the Obama administration, he said.

Six Prominent Local Republicans Endorse Huizenga for Congress

Longtime leaders from Ottawa, Allegan counties express confidence in Huizenga’s leadership abilities

ZEELAND–Six prominent Republicans from Ottawa and Allegan counties today announced their official endorsements of former State Rep. Bill Huizenga for Congress.

They are former State Sen. William VanRegenmorter, former State Sen. Leon Stille, State Rep. Arlan Meekhof, State Rep. Joseph Haveman, former State Rep. Fulton Sheen and longtime Ottawa County Register of Deeds Gary Scholten.

Their endorsements come almost exactly one year before the Aug. 3, 2010 primary election, in which 2nd district Republicans will choose a nominee to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra, who is retiring from Congress at the end of his term and is currently running for governor.

Source: Press Release from House Republican Leader John Boehner (site)

Rep. Kevin Brady: “This chart identifies 31 new federal programs, agencies, commissions, and mandates that will be in between patients and … their doctor.”

Washington, Jul 15 – House Republicans, led by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) and House Republicans on the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), today outlined a chart detailing the bureaucratic nightmare of the House Democrats’ health care plan.  The chart, which Brady detailed in a presentation to GOP leaders today, identifies at least 31 new federal programs, agencies, commissions and mandates that accompany the unprecedented government takeover of health care in America.  House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today:

U.S. Shouldn’t be Shy About Supporting Iranian Protesters

Pro-democracy demonstrations represent hope for the future

Twenty years ago, as a young college student, I was in a public square in Prague, the capital of the former nation of Czechoslovakia, being chased by riot police with dogs and water cannons, along with tens of thousands of other people.

Our group from Calvin College had wandered into the middle of a pro-democracy demonstration, and the communist government was having none of it.

Five months later, back home in Zeeland, I remember standing transfixed in front of a television screen, watching brave Chinese students demand democratic reforms in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Later that fall the world witnessed the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
