ZEELAND - Today I’m announcing my enthusiastic support for Congressman Peter Hoekstra’s campaign to become the next governor of Michigan.
I’m also encouraging the voters of West Michigan, as well as my fellow candidates in the 2ndcongressional district race, to embrace this historic opportunity for our region andrally behind Hoekstra, as well.
As you probably know, Congressman Hoekstra is currently involved in a tight race for the Republican nomination for governor. The nominee will be determined by voters throughout the state in the Aug. 3 Republican primary election.
According to all the polls, Hoekstra is doing very well. Despite the huge financial advantage of several of his opponents, he continues to lead the pack, which is a testament to the trust and respect that Michigan residents have for our longtime congressman.
He’s certainly earned that respect over the years. As a former director of public policy for Hoekstra for six years, I had the privilege of watching this unique, dedicated and effective public servant at work. Based on his record of leadership and success in the private sector as well as government, I believe he is the right man at the right time to lead Michigan through its current difficulties.
After eight years of heavy bickering and little positive action under the Granholm administration, our state desperately needs a no-nonsense leader with a clear conservative agenda, who will deal with the Legislature in a forthright and determined way.
Congressman Hoekstra has demonstrated the ability to take charge in difficult situations and solve problems through creative methods. He will reinvent government in Michigan, reform the way Lansing operates, make Michigan more attractive for business investment and job creation, and keep tax rates low.
He knows that our state government has sold itself out to too many special interests, a fact that prevents real reform from occurring. He’s tough enough to look state legislators in the eye and remind them that they work for the taxpayers, not the powerful organizations that fill their campaign coffers. He’s determined enough to force legislators to prioritize their spending and adequately serve the public with the revenue they already receive.
But he’s going to need the help of his West Michigan neighbors to win the Republican nod. The other three major candidates in the race are from heavily-populated Southeastern Michigan, and are counting on big vote totals from their home base to carry the day.
The political pundits all believe that statewide elections begin and end in Macomb andOakland counties.
But I think we have a great chance to prove them wrong. If West Michigan Republicans unite behind their favorite son and turn out for the primary in strong numbers, there should be more than enough votes to defeat the other candidates, who are certain to split a percentage of the Southeastern vote.
As someone who grew up andstill resides in Holland, Congressman Hoekstra understands the needs and concerns of West Michigan residents, and can be counted on to address those concerns in his new role in Lansing.
The time for wasteful spending, political gridlock and indecision in Lansing has long passed. Congressman Hoekstra is the ideal man to tackle the mess and get the job done. I hope all West Michigan voters will join me in supporting his historic campaign for governor.
