ZEELAND - With the Aug. 3 Republican primary election just around the corner, our state’s business community is uniting behind former State Rep. Bill Huizenga in his campaign for Congress in Michigan’s 2nd district.
That became even more apparent Thursday when the Friends of West Michigan Business, the political action committee of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, formally endorsed Huizenga for Congress.
“The best possible candidates to represent business, workers, and the economic well-being of West Michigan were carefully and thoughtfully endorsed by the Friends of West Michigan Business,” said Andy Johnston, director of legislative affairs for the chamber, which also announced candidate endorsements for several other Michigan races. “This slate of candidates will work tirelessly to support job creation and reign in government spending.”
Chamber leaders, like other business people across the state, have noted Huizenga’s business-friendly record during his three terms in the state House, and his eagerness to help Michigan companies rebound from the recession and create more jobs for state residents.
In six years of service, Huizenga voted against 700 different tax increase proposals and earned a 100 percent positive rating from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
Other prominent business leaders who have endorsed Huizenga include Steve Van Andel of Amway, Doug DeKock of GDK Construction, Bob Lynus of RAMI, John Workman and Mark Fazakerley of Eagle Alloy, Martin Nelson of Northpoint Industries and Patrick Thompson of Transmatic.
Huizenga said he was honored by the endorsement of the Chamber and other support from the business community. He pledged to pursue policies that will spark more economic activity and job creation in Michigan.
“One of the top priorities of government should be to help businesses recover from the downturn, so they can hire more people and help families recover from the downturn,” Huizenga said.
