Huizenga Vows to Work to Overturn the Democrats’ Health Care Mistake

As expected, the U.S. House voted Sunday to approve a federal takeover of the American health care system, despite the overwhelming objections of the American people.

Next January, if I have the honor of becoming your next congressman, I pledge to work with other Republicans and other like-minded colleagues to repeal this intrusive, unconstitional legislation, and begin an effort to enact common sense reforms that will lower the price of health care for all Americans.

Huizenga joins thousands of national leaders in signing the historic “Mount Vernon Statement”

Yesterday I enthusiastically added my signature to the “Mount Vernon Statement,” a sweeping document that reaffirms the conservative principles of government as outlined by the founding fathers in our federal Constitution.

The statement is an outgrowth of the work of the Conservative Action Project, an effort led by former Attorney General Edwin Meese to help conservative leaders throughout the nation work together toward common goals.

I’m proud to be the first candidate in the 2nd Congressional district race to subscribe to the principles spelled out in this important document. I hope the other candidates will join me and thousands of others who are have already signed it.

Asian-Carp Threat Stirs Rethink of Century-Old Feat

Great Lakes States Want to Effectively Undo a Historic Project and Cut Link to Mississippi River to Fend Off Invasive Fish

By DOUGLAS BELKIN | Wall Street Journal | Story

CHICAGO—More than a century ago, this city reversed the flow of its eponymous river, connecting the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and defining itself as the can-do capital of the American heartland.

Today, that engineering feat is coming under growing scrutiny, as scientists and politicians intensify their battle against a voracious flying fish that has been traveling up the Mississippi for 20 years. Amid signs that Asian carp have breached the last defensive barrier, calls are mounting for a massive do-over.

Tea Party movement can provide a big boost for GOP

Every Thursday a friendly group of local conservatives meet for breakfast at Carmen’s, a cozy little restaurant in downtown Muskegon.

I don’t get a chance to join that group as often as I would like, but I did attend this morning, and participated in an interesting conversation about the Tea Party movement.

Before I go any further, I should note that I’m a very big fan of the Tea Party movement. I was thrilled last year to be a featured speaker at a Tea Party event in Hudsonville. And I thought it was great for America when thousands of citizens stepped forward to challenge the dangerous policies of the Obama administration, particularly when it came to deficit spending.

Deficit Hawks vs. Deficit Peacocks: Fiscal Conservatism vs. Liberal Rhetoric

By Newt Gingrich | HumanEvents.com | Story

It’s not often that I quote the liberal Center for American Progress, but they’ve come up with a term for the Washington liberals posing as budget cutters that is perfect:  Deficit peacocks.

As opposed to deficit hawks who are the real fiscal conservatives, deficit peacocks strut around pretending to cut spending through gimmicks like spending freezes that are “freezes” only in the sense that they “freeze” into place previous frenzied spending binges (check out this clever video to see the “freeze” in action).

Huizenga Announces Campaign Fundraising Team

(HOLLAND, MI) Several prominent West Michigan civic and business leaders have banded together to lead the effort to raise funds to elect Bill Huizenga as the next congressman from Michigan’s second district, the campaign announced today.

“Bill Huizenga is the best choice to go to Washington D.C. and stand up for West Michigan,” said committee member Bill Payne. “Huizenga’s small business background, his years of work as district director for Pete Hoekstra, and his leadership as a state Representative in Lansing make him uniquely prepared to tackle the challenges of Washington.”

Lawmakers in Great Lakes region must unite against Asian Carp threat

A dreaded species of invasive fish is making a lot of news this week.

Unfortunately, most of the news is bad.

Scientists have been worried for years about the possible arrival of the Asian Carp in Lake Michigan and the rest of the Great Lakes. The concern is that the huge fish will disrupt the Great Lakes ecosystem and cause the collapse of our commercial and sport fishing industries.

That, in turn, could have a devastating effect on our already ailing economy.

The carp have been making their way north along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers for years, creeping dangerously closer to Lake Michigan all the time.

My friends in Haiti need our help as they struggle to assist earthquake victims

January 14, 2010

Rather than address a political issue this week, I would like to focus on the current plight of Haiti, which I’m sure you know was devastated by a massive earthquake Wednesday.

More specifically, I’m asking everyone who reads this message to give whatever they can afford to help the people of that poverty-stricken nation survive this latest tragedy.

I realize that a request is hardly necessary, because the good people of West Michigan have a long, proud history of providing aid and comfort to those in peril, anywhere in the world. So let’s just call this message a reminder.

Huizenga: Citizens should demand access to final health care deliberations

We all knew, well before his inauguration, that President Obama would pursue some sort of unfortunate federal takeover of the health care industry.

But at least Obama repeatedly promised to keep the health care debate out in the open, so Americans could closely watch and form their own opinions.

Obama even promised that final deliberations of a health care bill would be broadcast on C-SPAN, the cable network that provides a great deal of access to the workings of the federal government.

Security pushed aside, GOP says

Obama priorities questioned

By Joseph Curl

Top Republicans said Sunday that President Obama has been distracted from the terrorism threat against the United States by his ambitious domestic agenda — health care, climate change, the economy — and one former Bush official said the president has let down the national intelligence community.

Meanwhile, Mr. Obama’s top counterterrorism adviser said there was “no smoking gun” in the attempted bombing of a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day, despite a slew of missed red flags, including the facts that the bomber paid cash for his ticket and checked in without luggage.
