This week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of free speech and life. In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with pro-life pregnancy centers and against the State of California. At hand was California trying to require these pro-life centers to promote abortion in direct violation of their deeply held beliefs, conscience, and freedom of speech.
After the court announced it’s decision in the case of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra, Bill released the following statement:
“This historic ruling by the Supreme Court emphatically defends the freedom of speech by preventing the government from forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to promote abortion. Our basic freedoms and founding principles were established to protect us from this exact sort of government intimidation. This is an important victory for religious liberty, the freedom of speech, and the rights of all Americans guaranteed under the Constitution.”
In March, Bill spoke about the importance of pro-life pregnancy centers and the positive impact they have in West Michigan and communities around the country.
“Pro-life pregnancy centers are a valuable asset to women, to men, to the families, and certainly to babies, around the country and in Michigan. These centers provide, at no charge, practical resources, information, and emotional support for expecting mothers, fathers, and families in need. As leaders in this nation, we should be offering support, resources, and praises for their efforts – not forcefully targeting pregnancy resources centers with unconstitutional government mandates,” Bill stated on the floor of the U.S. House. “The law at issue in California is a classic example of government using its power to force its citizens to promote messages that conflict with their personal beliefs.”
Bill continues to vigorously work to promote a culture that values and respects life. This decision by the Supreme Court protects the constitutional rights of Americans while protecting those who cannot speak for themselves.
